What Investments are available

Your money could be placed in a number of different investments, each of which has differing advantages and disadvantages / strengths and weaknessesussions. Some of these are confirmed below.

·         Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) are virtually tax-free, although there is an effective 10% tax on dividends.

·         Deposit accounts are subject to income tax on the interest

·         National Savings are either tax-free, or subject to income tax, depending on the product chosen.

·         Unit trusts are subject to income tax on dividends and capital gains tax on profits upon encashment.

·        Open Ended Investment Companies (OEICs) and Investment trusts are taxed in the same way as Unit Trusts.

·     Investment Accounts are taxed in the same way as Unit Trusts and OEIC's.

·         Onshore Investment Bonds are taxed internally and so any withdrawals are ‘tax-free’ to nil and basic rate taxpayers. Higher rate taxpayers have additional income tax to pay on encashment. However, up to 5% of the original capital can be withdrawn annually, with the tax deferred until the entire Bond is encashed.

·         Offshore Bonds are not taxed internally but, on encashment, are fully subject to income tax. However, up to 5% of the original capital can be withdrawn annually, with the tax deferred until the entire Bond is encashed.

·         Pensions are free of capital gains tax within the fund and benefit from tax relief on contributions, however, they are limited in terms of access and how the proceeds can be used and are subject to income tax when benefits are taken.
